The lion’s heart

Leo is the one of the most recognizable constellations in the heavens. The curve of stars that make up the lion’s head and forelimbs resembles an old-fashioned sickle used for reaping, and so is named the Sickle. At its southern end, is the brightest of Leo’s stars, Regulus. It is also known as Cor Leonis, or the Lion’s Heart.

Leo, and in particular the Sickle, is the apparent source of one of the most spectacular meteor showers. Called the Leonids, they may rain down on the Earth at the rate of hundreds an hour around November 17 each year.
